It was a full weekend of OVA tournament play for our 16U and 18U teams. Here are the results of a jam-packed weekend:
Saturday Jan 18th – 16U
Walezi (Select): Ranked 9th in the tournament, a sweep of morning pool play matches landed the team in first place in their pool. In quarters, the team cruised to a two-set win, however the day ended with the team placing fourth setting up a return to Select for the fourth and final 16U event of the season.
Shujaa (Trillium White): The Shujaa went three sets in both morning matches, splitting pool play 1-1 and placing second in the pool. A quick two-set win in the quarters set up a rematch with Smash Dynamite in semis. Another three set barn-burner saw the girls fall 15-13 in set three. In the Bronze, the girls wobbled but outlasted their opponents to secure third place on the day.
Billao (Trillium Green): With a depleted squad due to illness, Billao split their morning pool play matches and placed second in their pool. A two-set loss to T-West in the quarters set up a 5/7 match with Rapids Cyclones, ending in a three set victory and securing a 5th place finish on the day.
Akrafena (Trillium Green): The squad got off to a bit of a slow start in pool play, dropping both matches to set up a quarter final match with a strong team from REACH. A two set loss in quarters was followed by a two set win in the 9th place match. In the 5/7 game, Akrafena pushed the match to three sets, but dropped the final set 13-15 to place 7th.
Sunday Jan 19th
Isihlangu (Select): A stacked Select tournament did not disappoint as some tremendous volleyball was on display. The Ishies met some fierce competitors on the day and although their overall result was 9th on the day, the experience of playing some of the best teams in the province at 18U will undoubtedly help the team push for the balance of the season.
Up Next: 14U takes the stage for the third OVA tournament weekend of the new year. Good luck to all!
