Event #2 of the OVA Ontario Provincial Championships took place over the April 11-13th weekend. This round of the OC’s featured 14UG (TLS) play.
Mambele (D1) entered the weekend as the 22nd ranked team overall in the province. Finishing with a 2-1 record after Day 1, the girls hit the courts at Conestoga on a high for Day 2 but could not sustain their winning ways, dropping all three matches on the day. On the final day of the event, Mambele pushed their quarter final match to three sets, but could not seal the deal. Final placement: D1T4 5th (T-29th overall in the province).
Nimcha (D4) put up a good fight on all three days but couldn’t find any consistency to get the ball rolling and get on a run of wins. Day 1 saw the team drop all their matches, pushing one match to three sets but falling short of a victory. Day 2 brought more of the same however the girls ended their day with a victory and some hope for a stretch run on elimination day. Ultimately, it was not to be as the team fell in two straight in their quarter final match, end their tournament ranked T-9th in D4T2.
Kascara (D5) had to manage a tricky schedule on the first two days of the event. Winning their two matches on Day 1, the team had high expectations for Day 2 and the four matches scheduled on the afternoon. Winning their first match of Day 2 in three, the team started to wobble, dismantling a 3-0 record to start the tournament, leaving the team at 3-3 by the end of pool play. Day 3 cured all that ailed though, as the team won three straight matches in straight sets, sending them to the D5T2 finals. A first set victory was followed by a tough second set loss, and a crushing 15-13 third set defeat. Congratulations on the silver medal for Kascara. They saved their best play for the last tournament day of the season.
Silaha (D5) got off to a rough start of their OC’s, dropping their first four matches in straight sets. Their last two matches of pool play saw the team push their opponents to three sets and the brink however the girls just couldn’t muster up enough to secure a victory. Heading into the final day of the tournament, Silaha brought the energy and the fight to their first match, winning in three to get to the quarters. Their winning ways ended at one though, as the team fought hard but lost in three, ending their season in D5T2 ranked T-5th.
