16U Aquila add to 3rd Place Collection

February 23, 2020

Another weekend hosting an OVA tournament resulted in another third place finish for our 16U Aquila.

Entering the McGregor Cup Championship tournament as the fourth seed, the expectations were high for the girls this weekend as the overall competition in the tournament was ready for the taking.  The first match of pool play vs. 15U FCVC Aspen saw Aquila promptly sweep them away in straight sets, 25-16 and 25-21.  During the second match of the day vs. Niagara Rapids Rapidfire, some poor team play and a number of mental errors cost the squad a straight sets defeat, 25-20 and 25-20.  Their pool play results had them finish second in the pool and granted them a spot in the quarter finals.

Aquila's quarterfinal match pitted them against local rival Defensa 15U White.  An absolute yard-sale of a first set luckily finished with Aquila squeaking out a 29-27 set win.  In the second set, Aquila got their game together and eventually dismissed their opponent with a 25-15 win, securing a spot in the semis vs. Defensa 16U White.

The first set of the semifinal was a back and fourth affair, with Aquila narrowly escaping with a 28-26 win.  However, that narrow victory could not produce anything of quality in the second set where Aquila dropped their play and set 25-22.  The third and deciding set did not reflect anything resembling the level of training that this team consistently demonstrates, dropping the set and match 15-11.  Disappointing to say the least.

Aquila would face the same Niagara Rapids Rapidfire team that they played in pool play for the third place match.  Again, another up and down, rollercoaster match saw Aquila take the first set 25-22, drop the second set 25-21 and then stumble through the third and final set to an eventual 15-11 win and third place finish for the tournament.

Although there were some bright spots scattered throughout the day on the offensive and defensive side of the ball, Aquila will need to find a way to bring their training game to game days will figuring out how to introduce a level of consistency that will keep them playing at the high rate that they are capable of.
