It was a busy weekend of OVA Ontario Championship action for our four 16U teams in Waterloo, Ontario.
Walezi (D1) dropped their first match of the event but didn’t look back after that. Reeling off six straight victories after the first match, the girls fell in a tight third set (12-15) to see their winning streak snapped. In the bronze medal match, the team was pushed to three but kept their opponent at bay to secure the victory and a podium finish in Division 1, Tier 2 (11th Overall in the Province). Congratulations on a strong tournament and season!
Shujaa (D3) got off to a slow start with a first day record of 1-2, placing them third in their pool. On Day 2, the girls found their groove and swept their opponents, setting up a Round of 16 match in Tier 1. A straight sets victory in the pre-quarters led to a match versus the top seed in the division. A strong first set win in the quarterfinal was not enough for the team to pull out a win, ending the season for these warriors. A tough loss indeed to end the season, but the team worked through a lot of adversity to finish the year on a strong note.
Akrafena (D4) finished the regular season with a bronze medal, however they could not find their stride throughout the three days of OC’s. The team fought hard but could not muster a win on Day 1 but managed to squeak out a victory in the final match of Day 2. The girls pushed their opponent to a third set in the pre-quarters but could not close it out, ending their tournament and season in D4T2.
Billao (D5) missed out on Division 4 by two points and showed why they should have been in D4 for OC’s. Billao swept Day 1 and 2 of pool play (6-0) then started elimination day with a three-set win to set the team up for a podium finish. Unfortunately, the girls could not overcome a fired-up Wildcats team in the semis, dropping two close sets. In the bronze medal match, the team regained their form and secured some hardware for their efforts. Congrats on your D5T1 bronze medal!
