Four Lakeside teams hit the courts Saturday to participate in the 16UG McGregor Cup. The McGregor Cup represents the third OVA tournament of the season, and with only the Bugarski Cup remaining for this age group (late February), rankings are starting to shake out and teams are starting to get a feel of Division splits for Ontario Championships.

In Thorold, ON, our 16U Takoba squad took top honours in their Trillium Green Division tournament. There were not too many close matches for the team as they proved that their commitment to training is paying off. Their final 16U tournament of the season will see them back in Trillium White before OC’s in April.

Heading north, the 16U Aquila competed against some very skilled opponents throughout their Championship Division tournament in Newmarket, ON. Strong play ruled the day for the team, securing a spot in the semi-finals after a three-set victory in quarters. The team met the tournament’s top seed, Northern Chill, and fell in two sets. In their 3rd place match, the team fought hard for three sets against a very tall and athletic Forest City Aspen squad but dropped the third set of the match and took 4th place overall.

In Woodbridge, our 15U Billao participated in their third 16U tournament of the season. Starting the Trillium Green event as the 6th seed, the team split their morning matches. Billao lost their quarter final match, setting up their final match of the day for 5th place. A tight match turned into victory and a sweet end to the day.

Finally…in Tillsonburg, ON, 16U Askari entered their Trillium White Division tournament as the 3rd seed. The team has been training at a very high level as of late, however all of their hard work did not translate to game play as the squad struggled to find their footing all day. A challenging day did end of a good note with a convincing final match win, taking it in two straight (25-12, 25-9) to take 5th spot.

Next up: Our Isihlangu host a 17U Select Division tournament on Feb 4th at Loyola CHS in Oakville. Good luck to the Isihies as they look to claim their spot back in Premier!
