16U Aquila Roughed Up in Indy
February 17, 2020
The Family Day weekend saw our 16U Aquila take to the courts in Indianapolis for the President's Day 2020 Tournament hosted by Team Indiana.
As pool play started on Saturday afternoon, the girls let their nerves get the better of them, dropping the first match in straight sets to an average-at-best opponent. After a game off, the girls returned to the court in hopes of brining more focus and more effort for their second match against another average team. The team played marginally better but could not muster enough positive play to get the job done, dropping another straight set match. The third and final match of the day saw Aquila pitted against the strongest team in the pool. This was easily the best match of the day for Aquila however the girls could not maintain any consistency in serving and passing and dropped their third straight set loss of the day to CVC, the eventual winners of the tournament who went undefeated on the weekend.
Sunday saw Aquila as the top seed in one of two Bronze pools, and a chance to reset and finish the weekend on a positive note. In the first match of Bronze pool play, the girls came out reasonably strong and confident, taking the first set 25-14. Unfortunately, there was little positive momentum retained from the end of the first set to the beginning of the second as Aquila started to tank and eventually lose the set 25-22. Now on the ropes of dropping the fourth match of the weekend, the team could not bring enough of their training efforts into the third set to pull them out of the doldrums, eventually dropping the set 15-8 and moving on to their fifth and final match of the weekend. Aquila won their final match in straight sets, but it was too little too late.
Aquila will have to shake off the disappointing trip to the US and quickly focus on regaining their form as they set their sites on winning an OVA Championship tournament at 16U this coming weekend.
