A Down Weekend for LSVC 14U

February 9, 2020

Our two 14U teams took to the court this past weekend with hopes of progressing up the ladder with a few timely wins.  Unfortunately, things did not play out as planned.

The Shujaas made the trip to Newmarket, ON to participate in a Trillium White tournament.  Entering the tournament as the eighth seed, the Shujaas started the morning off with a matchup against local rival Defensa 1WhiteFour.  A hard fought match saw the Shujaas fall in three sets however there was no time to rest as they had to turn things around quickly to play Durham Attack Invasion.  A two set match secured a second place spot in the pool and direct entrance into the quarter finals.  Things started to unravel for the Shujaas in the afternoon, where they dropped a three set match to the Georgian Cubs and then went on to miss an opportunity to remain in Trillium White by dropping their final match.

For the Isihlangu, the final result was not much better.  Also entering their Trillium Green tournament as the eighth seed, the Isihlangu also faced local rival Defensa 1WhiteThree in their first match.  This was a good test for the Isih as their roster consists of mostly 11-12 year olds playing up at 14U to avoid triple ball.  The first match concluded with a tough two set loss.  The second match of the day pitted the Isih against the KW Preds Infinity.  This match was much more even, with both teams sneaking a set each to force a third.  The Isih were up 13-11 and just needed to seal the deal with a strong serve, however a missed serve lead to four unanswered points and a 13-15 third set defeat.

In the pre-quarter match vs. Waterloo Tigers, the Isih cruised to an easy first set victory 25-18.  The wheels then came off and saw the Isih completely collapse, losing the next two sets (and the match) 13-25 and 4-15.  The Isihlangu were now set to play their fourth match of the day for an opportunity to play in a fifth and final match for fifth place.  Even though the team played admirably in the second set to force a third, it was just not meant to be as the girls dropped their third three set match of the day and finished a disappointing ninth.

Both 14U teams have a couple of weeks off to prepare for their fourth and final OVA tournament of the season before Provincials.  Good luck to them in the training gym, and hopefully better results are on the horizon!
