Six teams participated in OVA McGregor Cup tournaments across southern Ontario this weekend, with three teams hitting the podium once again.

Saturday Feb 1st

13U Assegai:  Hosting a Trillium event, the girls swept their pool matches to lock up top seed for the playoffs.  Squeaking out wins in the quarters and semis led the team to play for gold.  The girls couldn’t get over the finish line, dropping the match 2-1 but taking Silver on the day.

16U Shujaa:  Playing up at 17U Trillium, the Shujaa split their morning matches and found success in the quarters. In the semis, a disappointing performance saw the girls fall in three sets.  In the bronze match, the girls pulled it together for a second consecutive medal with a two-set sweep of the Grimsby Vipers.

Sunday Feb 2nd

17U Aquila:  Hosting a Select Division tournament, the team split their morning matches.  Cruising past Rapids TNT in the quarters, Aquila met up with Pakmen Gold in the semis.  The girls pushed Pakmen to the brink but ultimately fell in three sets.  A stress-free bronze medal match vs. Phoenix produced another medal for the team – their third of the season.

17U Askari:  Playing a Championship Division event, Askari claimed second in their pool after morning play.  A tough two set loss to eventual winners Smash Blaze pitted the girls against Smash Cyclones for the 5/7 match.  A three-set thriller ended in triumph for Askari, securing 5th and staying up in Championship for their final event in March.

17U Takoba:  Playing Trillium White, Takoba placed third in pool play but brought their game to the pre-quarters, winning in two straight over Phoenix.  A tough quarter against eventual winners Unity Strive set up another tough match vs. Reach in the 5/7 match.  A seventh-place finish capped the day for the squad.

16U Billao:  Playing up in a 17U Trillium event, Billao placed second in their pool.  In the quarters, the girls couldn’t keep pace with 41Six, dropping two straight.  The team rebounded in the 5/7 match, knocking off Georgetown Impact in two straight and claiming 5th place on the day.

Next Up:  15U McGregor Cup action for five Lakeside teams.  Good luck to all next weekend!
