It was an action-packed weekend of OVA volleyball for Lakeside Volleyball Club. With five teams in tournament play on both Saturday and Sunday, results were coming in fast and furious. Here is a quick recap of each teams’ results:
Playing in their only event of the 2021-22 season, the girls came together and played very well from start to finish. Starting their first match of the day at 7:30 am in Niagara Falls, the team started quick and outside of a few hiccups throughout the day, they persevered and sealed their 1st place finish. Generally consisting of underage players, the squad (ranked 10th entering the event) knocked off teams from Ancaster Lions, Wildcats and Milton Edge Volleyball Club to take home top honours of the day.
Next up for these girls is to return back to their respective teams and continue on with the OVA season. Congratulations to all involved – the players, the coaches, and the parents that of course make it all happen.
It was an exciting tournament for our Shujaas, as they were coming off of there fourth place finish in OVA Fall League play. The day started out strong for the group, with a first place finish in pool play and a trip straight to the quarter finals. In quarter final play, the Shujaas came back from a 0-1 set deficit to take a three set victory over Markham Resolution.
In the semi-finals, the Shujaas dropped straight sets to EVP Cullis which set up a 3rd place match with Galaxy Asteroids. The Asteroids gave the Shujaas all they could handle but the Shujaas proved resilient, winning the third set in a nail-biting fashion, 21-19.
Congratulations to the Shujaas on clinching a medal. Winter League play now awaits the team before they head to the Ontario Championships in April.
Our 18U Girls took to the courts of Ryerson University on Saturday morning. The theme of the day was to take top spot in pool play, and Shambulio followed suit with their 4-1 set record over the course of the morning. As the afternoon playoff matches began, Shambulio faced the Georgian Cubs for their quarter final match. The match went three sets, however the Shambulio fell in the third set, thus ending their run for a medal.
The team’s last match of the day had them facing Norfolk Polar Attack in the 5th/7th match. Another three set match had the Shambulio emerge victorious and finish the Furlani Cup in 5th place. Now the team awaits their final tournament of the season, the Bugarski Cup, in early April before playing the last OVA tournament of their club careers, the Ontario Championships, which starts on April 30th.
It was a rough day at the office for Kascara as they competed in their first tournament of the season. The team, a mix of girls ages 14-16 and never playing together prior to this season, took to the floor and gave it there all. However, the collective inexperience of the core players on the team proved to be too much, leaving the team with one set win on the day and a last place finish. Nevertheless, the group enjoyed their experience and are looking forward to their Winter League matches over the next month before hitting OC’s in April.
Our Silahas took to the court on Sunday morning in Hamilton. Morning pool play got the better of the team, dropping all four sets and entering the afternoon’s playoff rounds with little momentum. Unfortunately, the Silahas quarter final match versus the Brant Tornadoes did not produce the desired result, with the team dropping two straight and falling out of contention for the medal rounds.
In the final match of the day, the Silahas faced the Grimsby Vipers for the 5th/7th match. After a first set win, the Silahas could not hold on to the second set, dropping the set 23-25. In the third set, the Silahas were neck and neck with Grimsby throughout, but could not seal the deal and ended up falling 16-18. The Silahas finished the day tied for 7th, and now await Winter League matches and the Ontario Championships to round out their season.
