Another busy weekend of OVA volleyball tournament play produced some great results for our teams competing in the 16UG Challenge Cup throughout southern Ontario.
Here is a rundown of Saturday and Sunday’s tournament action:
Walezi: Hosting a Championship division tournament in Oakville, the team went undefeated in morning pool play and won their quarter-final and semi-final matches in fine fashion. In the gold medal match versus Pakmen, the team fought valiantly but could not seal the deal for top honours. Congrats to Walezi for earning a silver medal for their efforts on the day.
Billao: In Simcoe for their Trillium Green event, a couple of straight set victories in the AM set the team up for a favourable quarter-final matchup in the afternoon. A tight three set victory pushed the girls to the semis and two shots at a medal. Unfortunately, a tough loss to Brant followed by an even tougher three set defeat to Grimsby capped the day with the team settling for 4th place.
Shujaa: Playing Trillium White in Burlington, the team struggled to find any rhythm in the morning matches which led to a pre-quarter matchup with EVP. A convincing two set victory pushed the girls up against the top ranked Gryphons in the quarters. An uneven performance saw the girls fall in three sets, followed by a tough three set loss in the 5/7 match. Final placement: 7th.
Akrafena: Playing in Trillium Green, it was a solid day for this group of athletes as the team split their morning matches to take second in their pool. A relatively easy quarter final win propelled the team to the semis where they met a solid 41SIX team that closed out a tough match in two. In the bronze match, the team struggled to build any momentum and ended their day in 4th place – their best result of the season to date.
Inkemba: Playing up at 16U for the second time in Trillium Green this season, the girls pushed through several ups and down throughout their day in Waterloo. Barely earning the top spot in their pool by point ratio, the team snuck out a three-set win in the quarters and then toppled another high-ranking 15U team in the semis to play for the gold. An agonizingly close three set loss in the final brought silver as a prize for a crazy day of play.
UP NEXT: 14U and 18U OVA events cap 2024 for our teams. Good luck to all seven teams competing in the final weekend of the calendar year!
