It was a stellar weekend of 17UG OVA play, as five Lakeside teams competed in the Challenge Cup – the second of four official tournaments of the OVA season.
Headlining the group of teams was Aquila who were coming off a gold medal performance in the Provincial Cup in early November only to capture their second gold in as many tournaments. Several solid opponents traveled to the Kitchener area to compete in the Championship A event, but none could slow the team down as Aquila punched their ticket to Select division for the McGregor Cup in the new year. Congrats team!
In Woodbridge, much of the same high-level play was on display for the Askari, as the squad was promoted from Trillium Green after their Bronze medal to start this season’s campaign. They did not miss a step on their way to earning top spot in their Trillium White tournament on Saturday and have earned promotion to Championship to start the new year. Askari will host an 18UG event in two weeks to wrap 2024.
Other Weekend Results…
Takoba: Travelled down the QEW to play in a Trillium White event in Welland. A slow start to the day was salvaged as the girls grabbed two match victories in the playoff rounds to finish their Sunday in 5th place.
Shujaa: Playing up to 17UG for the second time this season, the girls split their morning matches to set up a match with local rival Milton Edge Titanium. Some uneven play from the AM carried over to the playoff round and ultimately caught up with the team to hold them to a 5th place finish in Trillium Green (Stratford, ON).
Billao: Also playing up in 17UG Trillium Green A (Tillsonburg, ON), it was their first event of the season at this age group. Splitting the morning matches 1-1 and ultimately placing 3rd in their pool after tiebreakers, Billao won their pre-quarter but fell in quarters to the eventual silver medal winners. The girls wrapped their day with a lopsided victory in straight sets to secure 5th place.
