Our 16UG teams, along with several 15UG squads playing up, took to the courts this past weekend to compete in the second OVA 16UG tournament of the season. It was an exciting two days of high-level volleyball, highlighted by strong performances and a gold-medal finish.
16 Cimpaba (Trillium Green)
A solid 4–1 set record in pool play set Cimpaba up nicely for the afternoon playoff rounds. The team rolled through the quarterfinals and semifinals with two straight-set victories to advance to the gold medal match against Durham Rebels Bounty. A back-and-forth battle saw Cimpaba force a third set, but they came up just short, falling 15–10 in the decider. Congratulations on a well-earned silver medal!
15 Mambele (Trillium Green)
Making the trip north to Orillia, Ontario, Mambele arrived locked in on a gold-medal goal. Playing up in their second and final 16U OVA tournament of the season, the girls dominated the field with an impressive 10–1 set record to capture their first gold medal of the season. An outstanding performance and a perfect way to head into the holiday break—congratulations, team!
16 Inkemba (Championship)
A challenging start to the day placed Inkemba in a pre-quarterfinal matchup to keep their playoff hopes alive. After grinding out a tough first set, the team cruised in the second to advance. In the quarterfinals, Inkemba pushed the top seed to the brink but narrowly missed advancing. A mentally tough rebound saw the team battle through three sets in the 5/7 match, securing the win and maintaining their Championship division status for the next event.
16 Sjambok (Trillium Green)
Sjambok split their pool-play matches to enter the quarterfinals as the second seed. Matched up against Barrie Elites Summit, the team couldn’t find their rhythm and dropped two straight sets. In the 5/7 match against Scorpions Fury, Sjambok showed resilience, trading sets and forcing a decisive third. The girls edged out a thrilling 16–14 victory to claim 5th place—congratulations!
16 Shotel (Trillium Green)
Two heartbreaking three-set losses in pool play—by scores of 16–18 and 12–15—placed Shotel into a pre-quarterfinal matchup against Smash Raiders. Another narrow third-set loss sent the team into a knockout match to stay alive. Once again, the girls rallied to force a third set but couldn’t find their momentum in the finale. The team will look to bounce back in January at the McGregor Cup.
15 Upanga (Trillium Green)
Competing in their first 16UG event of the season, Upanga topped their pool in morning play. After a long layoff, the team returned to the court in the quarterfinals against MVC and earned a hard-fought three-set win. In the semifinals, two extremely tight two-point losses ended their championship push. In the bronze medal match, the team couldn’t regain their earlier form and fell in straight sets to the Rapids. A strong overall showing and a 4th place finish—well done, team!
15 Nimcha (Trillium Green)
Playing up in their second 16U event of the season, Nimcha split their pool matches to finish second. Against Grimsby Vipers in the quarterfinals, the girls battled fiercely but dropped both sets in heartbreakers (24–26, 23–25). Nimcha rebounded with a three-set victory over Norfolk in the 5/7 match to secure 5th place. Great effort all around!
15 Silaha (Trillium Green)
Also traveling to Orillia for their first 16UG tournament, Silaha split their morning matches to finish second in their pool. In the quarterfinals, the team pushed Thunderbolts to three sets but fell just four points short, setting up a 5/7 match with Vaughan Legends. Silaha controlled the match despite being pushed to three sets and secured 5th place.
