Seven Lakeside teams took to the courts over the past weekend and brought home a couple more pieces of hardware. Here is a quick rundown of the results:
16UG Provincial Cup
Walezi: Started the day off by winning their pool. In the quarter finals, the team suffered a three set loss to the eventual bronze medal winners but finished their day on a positive noter with an easy 2-0 win for a 5th place finish. The team will compete in Championship division once again in December.
Shujaa: Split their morning pool play matches to finish second in their pool. Won their quarter final in straight sets but fell in the semis to the Waterloo Tigers. In the bronze medal match, the team struggled to find rhythm, losing in straight sets to place 4th in the tournament.
Billao: The team went 1-1 in pool play to finish second in their pool and secure a spot in the quarter finals. A hard fought match against KW Preds ended in heartbreak with Billao losing 16-14 in the third and deciding set. The team beat Oakville Thunder for the second time on the day to secure 5th place.
Akrafena: A tough couple of matches in pool play push the team to the pre-quarter match vs. Georgetown Impact. A three set thriller unfortunately ended with a 15-13 loss in the final set. The team then went three with Simcoe Xtreme but once again could not squeak out a win. Akrafena finished 9th on the day.
Inkemba: Playing up to 16U for the first tournament of the season, the team won their first three matches of the season (two pool matches and their quarter final). In the semis, the team fell to Ancaster Lions in three, but managed to hold on and win a 17-15 third set vs. Scorpions to win Bronze.
18UG Provincial Cup
Askari: Playing up to 18U for their second event of the season, the team were in great form, making it through pool play, quarters and semis for a spot in the gold medal match. The girls fought hard but came up a bit short on the day, taking silver for the tournament and their second medal on the year.
Takoba: Also playing up to 18U for the event, the team placed third in their pool but started to pick up their play for the playoff rounds, losing a tough three set match in the quarters and then winning their match against hosts Norfolk Chaos to play in the 5/7 match. The team ended the day in 7th.
