November 2nd and 3rd marked the official start of the OVA tournament season, with 17UG events running all over the Province. Lakeside had four teams compete in the 17UG Provincial Cup over the weekend, and what a winning weekend it was.
Earning top honours in their Trillium White event Saturday was 17U Aquila, whom ran the table to a perfect 5 – 0 record on the day and outlasted a feisty Pakmen Black Adrian in the Gold medal match to capture their first title of the season. The team will now move to Championship division for their next event in early December, and we look forward to watching Aquila continue to rise through the ranks as the season churns along.
Also participating in a Saturday OVA tournament was 17U Takoba whom travelled to Woodbridge for their Trillium Green event. Another strong performance put forth by all of the girls helped the team to a 4 – 1 record on the day, sustaining their only defeat in the Gold medal match to a worthy Galaxy Meteors team that didn’t drop a set the entire tournament. Our Takoba took home Silver for their efforts…congrats to the players and coaches on a stellar finish!
On Sunday, two Lakeside teams made their way across the QEW to Welland where 17U Askari and 16U Shujaa participated in another Trillium Green event. Both teams performed admirably throughout the day – even meeting each other in a quarter final, with Askari besting the Shujaa in straight sets. Askari finished the day with a hard fought win over REACH Stingrays in the Bronze medal match while the Shujaa wrapped their tournament with a three set victory over Grimsby Vipers Apex to secure a 5th place finish.
Congratulations to all teams on their play and successes this past weekend. Three podium finishes on the first weekend of the season is a fantastic start. We are proud of your accomplishments.
UP NEXT: Seven teams will take to the court on November 9-10, with five teams competing on Saturday in the 16UG Provincial Cup and two teams competing in the 18UG Provincial Cup. Good luck to all Lakeside teams competing all over Southern Ontario!
