It was a busy weekend for our 18U, 16U, and 15U girls’ teams as they took to the courts for the New Year’s Open and the 16U MacGregor Cup OVA events. Let’s get right to it:
18 Aquila
Participating in the New Year’s Open in Mississauga at the International Centre, the girls had a mixed first day, leading to a 1–2 record. On elimination day, the team was victorious in their first match but fell in their final match of the day. A decent tournament overall, which should help them heading into this coming weekend in Indianapolis.
18 Askari
Playing in Division 1 at the same New Year’s Open tournament, the girls competed hard and were in every match but could not find success in the win column. Facing stiff competition throughout the weekend, the team looks forward to their next event, where they will undoubtedly take their learnings from this weekend and turn them into success.
18 Takoba
The third team competing at the New Year’s Open this past weekend, Takoba managed to win a couple of sets and boost their confidence as they await their next OVA tournament at the end of February. We look forward to seeing these girls in action at the MacGregor Cup.
16 Inkemba
Inkemba hosted their second event of the season in the Championship Division. A flat start to the day was followed by a stellar second match, allowing the team to win their pool. Unfortunately, that’s where the good news ended, as they finished 7th on the day.
16 Cimpaba
Hosting their event at Garth Webb Secondary School, the team played their first Trillium White event but could not find a rhythm in the afternoon playoff rounds, also finishing 7th on the day.
16 Sjambok
The squad finished atop their pool at the end of the morning round robin and carried that success into the playoff rounds with a first-round win. In the semifinals, the team fell in two straight sets and ultimately lost in three sets in the bronze medal match. Congratulations on a 4th-place finish.
16 Shotel
Entering their tournament as the eighth seed, the girls showed up and took top honors after pool play. Things kept rolling for Shotel as they reeled off two more victories to advance to the gold medal match. A strong Waterloo Tigers team unfortunately broke their streak, but hats off to the team for earning the silver medal!
15 Upanga
Playing in their second and final 16U event of the season, the team had a perfect morning that led to an almost perfect afternoon. Going 10–1 in set wins and 5–0 in match play, the girls secured their first gold medal of the season. Congratulations, ladies!
15 Nimcha
Also participating in a 16U event, Nimcha finished third after pool play. A convincing quarterfinal win led to a heartbreaking three-set loss in the semifinals. In the bronze medal match, the team reversed their fortunes and took home the bronze. Congratulations!
15 Silaha
Co-hosting with Upanga, the girls finished second in pool play. In the quarterfinals, they met Upanga but fell to their sister team. In the 5th/7th place match, the team pushed hard and defeated their opponents in two straight sets.
Up next: Our 14U teams participate in their third OVA tournaments of the season. Good luck to all teams participating!
